Study Different: Learning How University Actually Works

University often requires students to rethink how they study and discover which learning strategies work best for different courses.

You did well in secondary school. You knew how to study. You knew how to prepare for examinations. You knew how to take notes, memorise information, complete assignments and get the grades. Then you arrived at university and discovered something deeply disrespectful.

 

The studying that used to work... may not work anymore.

 

You read the chapter. You highlighted half of it. You copied the lecturer's slides. You looked over your notes the night before the test. And somehow, when the question appeared in front of you, it wasn't asking you to repeat what you had learnt. It wanted you to explain it. Apply it. Analyse it. Compare it. Critique it. Excuse me?

 

Welcome to another university adjustment.

 

University doesn't only give you more responsibility for managing your time. It often asks you to take much greater responsibility for how you learn. And that means you may have to learn how to study all over again.

 

Secondary School Prepared You. University Asks for More.

This isn't about dismissing everything that worked for you before.

 

Your secondary-school years may have taught you discipline, note-taking, revision, examination preparation, research, writing and how to work towards a deadline.

 

Those skills still matter. But university may require you to use them differently.

 

In secondary school, teachers often provide considerable structure around what you need to know. Lessons may move through a syllabus in a fairly organised way. Teachers explain concepts, assign work, remind you about assessments and spend time preparing you for examinations.

 

At university, a lecturer may introduce a concept during class and expect you to explore it further afterwards. A reading list may contain far more material than anyone could discuss during a lecture. You may be expected to connect ideas from several sources. You may have to decide which information is most relevant. And sometimes the lecturer's slides are not the notes.

 

They are simply the beginning of the conversation.

 

Attending the Lecture Is Not the Same as Learning the Material

You went to class. Excellent. That doesn't necessarily mean you're finished with that topic.

 

A lecture might give you the framework. Your reading adds depth. Your tutorial or lab may give you an opportunity to apply what you've learnt. Your own study helps you make sense of it. Think of learning as something that continues before, during and after class.

 

Before class, you might briefly review the topic or assigned reading so the material isn't completely unfamiliar. During class, listen for the ideas the lecturer is emphasising rather than trying desperately to write down every word. Afterwards, review what you learnt while it is still relatively fresh.

 

Ask yourself:

What was the main idea?

What do I understand?

What am I still confused about?

 

That last question matters. Confusion caught this week is much easier to deal with than confusion discovered during examination week.

 

Stop Trying to Write Down Everything

This can be difficult if you're accustomed to treating notes as a transcript.

 

The lecturer speaks. You write. The lecturer changes the slide. You panic because you haven't finished writing. Good notes don't necessarily contain every word. They help you understand and retrieve the important ideas later.

 

That might mean recording:

  • Key concepts;

  • Definitions;

  • Examples;

  • Explanations that made something clearer;

  • Connections between ideas;

  • Questions you need to investigate;

  • References or readings the lecturer recommends; and

  • Anything the lecturer repeatedly emphasises.

 

If slides or lecture materials are available beforehand, you may not need to reproduce information you already have.

 

Use your attention for understanding. Your hand can only write so fast. Your brain needs to be in the room too.

 

Reading at University Is Different Too

University reading can be a shock.

 

One course gives you a chapter. Another gives you three journal articles. Someone else uploads 67 pages and behaves as though you have no other courses. The temptation is either to read every word with equal intensity or become overwhelmed and read nothing.

 

Neither is particularly useful.

 

Not every piece of academic reading needs the same approach. Before diving in, ask:

Why am I reading this?

 

Are you trying to understand a new concept?

Prepare for a lecture?

Find evidence for an assignment?

Compare different arguments?

Review something you've already learnt?

Your purpose should influence how you read.

 

For an academic article, you might first look at the title, abstract, headings, introduction and conclusion to understand what the author is doing before reading more closely. For a textbook chapter, headings, summaries, diagrams and review questions can help you identify the structure.

 

Then read more carefully where you need depth. This isn't cheating. It's reading strategically.

 

Highlighting Everything Is Just Colouring

We've all seen the page.

 

Yellow. Pink. Green. Orange. Beautiful. And now absolutely nothing stands out because apparently every sentence was important. Highlighting can help, but only if you are making decisions about what matters. The same applies to copying passages into your notes.

 

Recognition is not the same as understanding.

 

Something can look extremely familiar because you've read it four times and still disappear from your brain the moment you're asked to explain it without looking.

 

After reading a section, close the book or move your notes away and ask:

What did I just learn?

 

Try to explain it in your own words. If you can't, that tells you something useful. You aren't testing whether you're intelligent. You're finding the part that needs more work.

 

Studying Is Not the Same as Looking at Your Notes

There is a very convincing form of studying where you sit with your books open for three hours and feel academically responsible. Unfortunately, your brain may have done very little.

 

Learning tends to become stronger when you have to retrieve information rather than simply look at it again. Instead of only rereading, try:


  • Turning headings into questions and answering them without your notes.

  • Using flashcards for information that genuinely needs to be remembered.

  • Explaining a concept aloud as though you're teaching someone else.

  • Creating practice questions.

  • Working through problems without looking at the solution first.

  • Writing down everything you can remember about a topic, then checking what you missed.

  • Comparing two theories or concepts from memory.

  • Applying an idea to a new example.

 

The point isn't to make studying harder for the sake of it. It's to find out what your brain can actually produce when the information isn't sitting directly in front of you.

 

Learn What the Question Is Asking You to Do

University assessments often contain instruction words that matter.

 

Describe. Explain. Compare. Analyse. Evaluate. Discuss. Critique. They are not necessarily asking for the same kind of answer. You could know a tremendous amount about a topic and still lose marks because you answered the question you wanted to answer rather than the one you were actually given.

 

Before starting an assignment or examination response, identify the task.

  • What is the question asking you to do with what you know?

  • Does it want explanation?

  • Application?

  • Comparison?

  • An argument?

  • Evidence?

  • Evaluation?

 

If you're unsure what is expected, ask. Understanding the task is part of completing it.


Learn How Your University Expects You to Use Sources

University isn't only interested in what you think. Depending on the assignment, you may be expected to show how your ideas connect with research, evidence and the work of other people.

 

That means learning how to use sources properly.

 

Your course or institution may require a particular referencing style, such as APA, MLA, Chicago, Harvard or another system. You don't need to memorise every rule immediately, but you do need to know which system you're expected to use and where to find reliable guidance.

 

More importantly, learn what plagiarism means.

 

Copying someone's words without acknowledging them is plagiarism, but academic integrity goes beyond simply avoiding copy-and-paste. You also need to understand when ideas should be cited, how to paraphrase appropriately and what kinds of collaboration or assistance are permitted for an assignment.

 

If you're unsure, ask.

 

Libraries, lecturers, writing centres and university academic-integrity resources can often help you learn these conventions.

 

Referencing can feel painfully fussy when you're new to it. But acknowledging where information and ideas came from is part of learning how academic work is built.

 

Your First Grade Might Hurt Your Feelings

Let's talk about this one.

 

You may have been one of the strongest students in your secondary school. You may be accustomed to high marks. Your family may be accustomed to high marks. You may have entered university with a whole identity built around being the smart one. Then you get your first university assignment back. And the grade is...

 

Well. You need a moment.

 

A lower grade than you're used to does not automatically mean you suddenly became less intelligent. The standard may have changed. The type of thinking may have changed. The expectations may have changed. You are learning a new academic environment.

 

Instead of only asking: “Why did I get this mark?”

ask: “What is this feedback teaching me about what university-level work requires?”

 

Read the comments. Look at the marking criteria or rubric. Notice where you lost marks. Was your argument unclear? Did you need more evidence? Did you describe when you were supposed to analyse? Were your references incorrect? Did you answer only part of the question?

 

A disappointing grade can become useful information if you know how to read it.

 

Feedback Is Part of the Assignment

Students sometimes look at the grade and never read anything else.

 

Understandable. Especially when the grade has already offended you. But the feedback may be the most valuable part.

 

A lecturer or tutor is showing you where your work met the expected standard and where it didn't. Use that information on the next assignment. If you don't understand the feedback, ask whether you can discuss it.

 

You aren't begging for marks. You're trying to understand how to improve. There is a difference.

 

Don't Wait Until Examination Week to Discover What You Don't Know

Cramming can create the comforting illusion that your brain will simply cooperate under pressure. Sometimes it does. Sometimes it looks at you during the examination and says: I have never seen this information before in my life. 

 

Regular review doesn't have to mean studying for hours every night. It can be much smaller. At the end of the week, look across your courses.

  • What did we cover?

  • What makes sense?

  • What needs more practice?

  • What haven't I reviewed at all?

  • What question have I been quietly avoiding because I don't understand it?

 

A small amount of attention throughout the semester can prevent examination preparation from becoming an archaeological expedition through material you haven't seen since Week Two.

 

Different Courses May Need Different Study Methods

There is no single perfect university study method.

 

The way you prepare for a mathematics examination may not be the way you prepare for a literature essay. A course requiring calculations may demand repeated problem-solving. A course heavy in terminology may benefit from retrieval practice and flashcards. A theory-based course may require you to compare arguments and explain concepts. A practical course may require demonstrations, labs or repeated application. A writing-intensive course may demand reading, research, outlining, drafting and revision.

 

Don't ask only: “How do I study?”

Ask: “What does learning look like for this course?”

 

That question is much more useful.

 

Group Study Can Be Brilliant... or a Lime With Books

There is nothing wrong with studying with other people.

 

Explaining ideas to one another can reveal gaps in understanding. Working through difficult questions together can help. Comparing interpretations can deepen your thinking. But sitting around a table with textbooks nearby does not automatically make the gathering academic.

 

If you use group study, give it a purpose.

  • What are you trying to accomplish?

  • Review a topic?

  • Quiz one another?

  • Work through problems?

  • Prepare for a presentation?

  • Discuss difficult concepts?

 

There can absolutely be jokes, snacks and conversation. Just make sure some studying accidentally occurs too.

 

Learn Where Academic Help Lives

You are not expected to struggle alone until you either understand the material or fail.

 

Universities may offer support through lecturers, tutors, teaching assistants, academic advisers, libraries, writing centres, mathematics support, peer tutoring, study-skills programmes or other services.

 

What exists will depend on your institution. Find out. And don't wait until you're in crisis to learn where those resources are.

 

If a lecturer offers consultation or office hours, those aren't decorative. Use them when you need clarification. Bring a specific question where possible.

 

Instead of: “I don't understand anything.”

try: “I understand this part, but I'm struggling to see how this concept connects to this one.”

 

The clearer you can be about where you're stuck, the easier it may be for someone to help you.

 

Be Careful About Comparing How Much Everyone Says They Study

University introduces you to people with very different learning styles, educational backgrounds and habits.

 

Someone will say they barely studied and got an A. Someone else will claim they studied for twelve hours straight. Someone started the assignment three weeks ago. Someone started it at 11:47 p.m. None of this tells you what you need.

 

People also have a remarkable ability to leave out useful information when describing how little effort something took them. Pay attention to your own results. If your current approach is helping you understand the material and perform well without destroying your wellbeing, good. If it isn't, adjust.

 

The goal isn't to study the way the smartest-looking person in the room studies. The goal is to discover what helps you learn effectively.

 

Technology Can Help You Learn. It Can Also Help You Avoid Learning.

Your laptop can hold your textbooks, notes, readings, flashcards, lectures and research. It can also contain social media, messages, videos, games and seventeen browser tabs that have absolutely nothing to do with your degree.

 

You don't need to become a digital monk. But pay attention to whether your study environment is helping your attention or constantly breaking it.

 

Sometimes the simplest adjustment is enough. Put the phone out of reach for twenty minutes. Close tabs you don't need. Turn off unnecessary notifications. Download the reading so you can work offline. Use a timer. Then take a break. The goal isn't endless concentration. It's creating periods where your brain has a reasonable chance of focusing on one thing.

 

And Yes, We Need to Talk About AI

AI tools are now part of the academic landscape.

 

They can help you brainstorm questions, clarify concepts, organise ideas, practise explanations or identify areas you may need to study further. But there is an important difference between using a tool to support your learning and using it to avoid learning.

 

If a tool does the thinking you were supposed to practise, you may submit something without developing the knowledge or skill the assignment was designed to assess.

 

There are also academic-integrity issues.

 

Different universities, faculties, lecturers and assignments may have different rules about whether and how AI tools can be used. Know the rules that apply to your work. Those rules can also change, so don't assume that what was permitted for one course or assignment automatically applies to another.


And remember: AI can produce information that sounds extremely confident and is still wrong. Check important information against reliable sources.

 

If you use AI to help you study, the question shouldn't only be:

“Can this give me the answer?”

 

Ask: “Is this helping me understand why this is the answer?”

 

Because when you're sitting in an examination, giving a presentation, completing practical work or eventually doing the job your degree is preparing you for, understanding matters.

 

You Are Learning How You Learn

This may be one of the most useful things university teaches you.

 

You begin noticing what helps information stick. What distracts you. When you concentrate best. What kind of notes are useful. Which study methods waste your time. When you need more practice. When you need someone to explain something differently. When you're genuinely confused and when you've simply been avoiding the work. That knowledge can follow you long after graduation. Because education doesn't end when someone hands you a degree.

 

Throughout your career and your life, there will be new information, new systems and new skills to learn. Knowing how you learn is a skill in itself.

 

First Step Tip

After studying a topic, don't immediately ask: “Have I spent enough time on this?”

 

Ask: “What can I explain, solve, apply or recall without looking at my notes?”

 

Time spent studying matters less than what your brain can actually do with what you've studied.

You don't need to have the answer immediately. Pay attention. Experiment. Adjust. The goal isn't to become someone who studies all the time. It's to become someone who knows how to learn.
