Easter Sunday, the most joyful and triumphant day of the Christian calendar, marks the glorious resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. After the solemnity of Good Friday and the stillness of Glorious Saturday, Easter bursts forth in vibrant hope and divine renewal. It’s a celebration of victory over death, of promises fulfilled and of new beginnings, both spiritual and personal.
What Easter Sunday Means in Christianity
The Gospels tell us that on the third day after Jesus’ crucifixion, the stone was rolled away from the tomb and it was empty. Jesus had risen, just as He said He would. This moment is the cornerstone of Christian faith: the belief that through Christ’s resurrection, we are offered eternal life.
Easter is not just a commemoration, but an invitation to live anew, to rise from what weighs us down and to walk forward with faith, courage and love. It reminds believers that no darkness lasts forever and that light always returns.
Easter in Trinidad & Tobago: A Celebration of Faith & Community
In Trinidad & Tobago, Easter Sunday is both deeply spiritual and joyfully communal. Churches across the country come alive with celebration, colourful floral arrangements return to altars, choirs lift their voices in praise and the faithful wear their Sunday best in honour of this holy occasion.
Families gather for special meals, often featuring traditional favourites like macaroni pie, callaloo and freshly baked hot cross buns. It’s a day of love, laughter and sharing - the kind that lingers with you even after the last slice of pie is gone.
Children enjoy Easter egg hunts, Easter Bonnet Parades and homemade treats, a blend of imported customs and Caribbean creativity. And while Easter Bunny imagery may be found in stores, for many Trinbagonians, the true meaning of the day remains rooted in faith and fellowship.
Local Church Traditions
In Catholic churches throughout the country, the Easter Vigil held the night before leads into Easter Sunday with reverence and radiance. The lighting of the Paschal candle, the ringing of church bells, and the return of the “Alleluia” - absent throughout Lent, all signal the joy of the risen Christ.
Churchgoers dress in bright colours, the Lenten purple is replaced with celebratory white and gold and the community gathers to rejoice together after a period of fasting, sacrifice, and introspection.
For some, the Easter weekend also includes sunrise services in open-air spaces, such as, beaches, savannahs, or riversides, a beautiful Trinbagonian blend of worship and natural beauty.
A Time for Renewal
More than anything, Easter Sunday reminds us that resurrection is possible not just in death, but in life. It’s a call to rise from despair, disappointment and spiritual weariness. Whether you spent Lent in deep devotion or found yourself stumbling along the way, Easter welcomes all with open arms.
In the words of local preachers and grandmothers alike, “He is risen!” And because He lives, we can face tomorrow.
May this Easter bring you peace, purpose and a renewed sense of joy. From our island to your heart - Happy Easter!
