Gastritis 101: A Guide to Causes, Symptoms and Healing

Updated: Jul 20

Gastritis is a condition characterized by inflammation of the stomach lining, which can be acute (short-term) or chronic (long-term). It is a common issue that affects millions of people worldwide and can lead to discomfort, pain, and other digestive problems. Gastritis can be caused by various factors, including infections, lifestyle habits and the use of certain medications. Understanding the causes, symptoms and treatment options for gastritis is essential for managing the condition effectively.

What Causes Gastritis?

Gastritis occurs when the protective lining of the stomach is weakened or damaged, allowing stomach acid to irritate the stomach lining. Several factors can contribute to this inflammation:

  1. Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) Infection: A common bacterial infection that can disrupt the stomach's protective lining, leading to inflammation and, in some cases, ulcers.

  2. Prolonged Use of Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs): Medications like aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen can irritate and inflame the stomach lining, especially when used long-term or in high doses.

  3. Excessive Alcohol Consumption: Alcohol can erode the stomach lining, leading to irritation and inflammation.

  4. Stress: Severe stress due to surgery, injury or severe illness can increase stomach acid production, leading to gastritis.

  5. Autoimmune Gastritis: In some cases, the immune system mistakenly attacks the cells of the stomach lining, leading to chronic inflammation. This form of gastritis is associated with vitamin B12 deficiency.

  6. Bile Reflux: A condition where bile from the liver flows back into the stomach, irritating the stomach lining.

  7. Infections: Besides H. pylori, other infections, including viral and fungal infections, can cause gastritis, particularly in individuals with weakened immune systems.

  8. Other Factors: Certain diseases and conditions, such as Crohn’s disease, celiac disease and sarcoidosis, can also cause gastritis.

Symptoms of Gastritis

Gastritis symptoms can vary depending on the severity of the inflammation and the underlying cause. Common symptoms include:

  1. Abdominal Pain or Discomfort: A burning or gnawing sensation in the upper abdomen, often worsening after eating.

  2. Nausea and Vomiting: Feeling nauseous or vomiting, sometimes with blood or material that looks like coffee grounds (a sign of bleeding).

  3. Bloating: A feeling of fullness or tightness in the abdomen, often after eating.

  4. Loss of Appetite: A reduced desire to eat, which can lead to unintended weight loss.

  5. Indigestion (Dyspepsia): General discomfort in the upper abdomen, including feelings of fullness, bloating and gas.

  6. Belching: Frequent burping, often associated with bloating and discomfort.

  7. Black, Tarry Stools: A sign of bleeding in the stomach, indicating a more severe form of gastritis or an ulcer.

Diagnosing Gastritis

If you experience symptoms of gastritis, it’s important to see a healthcare provider for an accurate diagnosis. Diagnostic tests for gastritis may include:

  1. Endoscopy: A procedure where a flexible tube with a camera (endoscope) is inserted down the throat to examine the stomach lining. Biopsies may be taken to check for inflammation, H. pylori infection or other issues.

  2. Blood Tests: Blood tests can help identify anaemia (a sign of bleeding) and check for H. pylori infection.

  3. Stool Test: A stool test can detect the presence of blood (a sign of bleeding) or H. pylori.

  4. Urea Breath Test: A test to detect H. pylori infection by measuring the amount of carbon dioxide in your breath after swallowing a urea capsule.

Treatment of Gastritis

The treatment for gastritis depends on the underlying cause and the severity of the condition. Common treatments include:

  1. Medications:

    • Antibiotics: If H. pylori infection is present, a combination of antibiotics is prescribed to eradicate the bacteria.

    • Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs): Medications like omeprazole, lansoprazole, and esomeprazole reduce stomach acid production, allowing the stomach lining to heal.

    • H2 Blockers: Drugs like ranitidine and famotidine reduce acid production and relieve symptoms.

    • Antacids: Over-the-counter antacids can neutralize stomach acid and provide quick relief from symptoms.

    • Cytoprotective Agents: Medications like sucralfate and misoprostol help protect the stomach lining from acid.

  2. Lifestyle and Dietary Changes:

    • Avoid Trigger Foods: Stay away from foods and drinks that can irritate the stomach lining, such as spicy foods, alcohol, and caffeinated beverages.

    • Eat Smaller, More Frequent Meals: Eating smaller portions more often can reduce the burden on the stomach and help manage symptoms.

    • Quit Smoking: Smoking can increase stomach acid production and worsen symptoms.

    • Reduce Stress: Practice stress-reducing techniques like meditation, yoga, or deep breathing exercises to lower the risk of stress-related gastritis.

  3. Treating Underlying Conditions:

    • If gastritis is caused by another condition, such as bile reflux or autoimmune disease, treating that underlying condition is crucial.

Complications of Untreated Gastritis

If left untreated, gastritis can lead to more serious health issues, including:

  1. Peptic Ulcers: Open sores that develop on the stomach lining or the upper part of the small intestine, causing pain and potentially leading to bleeding.

  2. Gastric Bleeding: Severe inflammation can cause bleeding in the stomach, leading to black, tarry stools or vomiting blood.

  3. Anaemia: Chronic bleeding from the stomach can lead to anaemia, a condition where the body lacks enough healthy red blood cells to carry oxygen.

  4. Pernicious Anaemia: Chronic autoimmune gastritis can lead to vitamin B12 deficiency, resulting in pernicious anaemia, which can cause fatigue, weakness and neurological issues.

  5. Gastric Cancer: Chronic gastritis, particularly when caused by H. pylori infection, increases the risk of developing stomach cancer over time.

How to Prevent Gastritis

Preventing gastritis involves adopting habits that protect the stomach lining and reduce the risk of inflammation:

  1. Healthy Diet: Consume a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins. Avoid foods that can irritate the stomach lining, such as spicy, acidic and fatty foods.

  2. Limit NSAID Use: If you need to take NSAIDs for pain relief, do so under a doctor’s guidance and for the shortest time possible. Consider alternatives like acetaminophen, which is gentler on the stomach.

  3. Moderate Alcohol Consumption: Limit alcohol intake to reduce the risk of gastritis and other digestive issues.

  4. Manage Stress: Engage in stress-reducing activities like exercise, meditation and hobbies to prevent stress-related gastritis.

  5. Regular Medical Check-ups: Regular visits to a healthcare provider can help detect and manage any digestive issues early on, reducing the risk of complications.

Gastritis is a common but manageable condition that requires attention to both lifestyle and medical treatment. By understanding its causes, recognizing symptoms early, and adopting healthy habits, individuals can effectively manage gastritis and reduce the risk of complications. If you experience persistent symptoms of gastritis, seeking medical advice is crucial for proper diagnosis and treatment. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle can also play a significant role in preventing gastritis and ensuring long-term digestive health.
