Yoga, at its core, is more than a physical practice. It is a holistic philosophy guiding us toward a life of balance, integrity and self-awareness. Among the Yamas, the ethical principles outlined in Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, Asteya, or non-stealing, holds a profound relevance in modern living. While the word “stealing” may evoke images of theft in the material sense, Asteya invites us to explore deeper layers of how we take from others, from the world, and even from ourselves.

Understanding Asteya

Derived from the Sanskrit root “steya,” meaning “to steal,” Asteya goes beyond refraining from taking what does not belong to us. It calls for a mindset of abundance, gratitude and respect for the resources, time and energy of others.

Asteya challenges us to examine our intentions and actions, asking:

  • Are we taking more than we need?

  • Are we depriving others by our actions or inactions?

  • Are we honouring the space and energy we share with the world?

Asteya on the Mat

In yoga practice, Asteya encourages us to:

  1. Avoid self-comparison: Stealing others' energy by envying their abilities or progress detracts from your own practice. Focus on your unique journey.

  2. Respect your body’s limits: Overexertion or forcing poses steals from your body’s well-being. Honour where you are today.

  3. Share the space: In a group class, be mindful of not encroaching on others’ physical or emotional space.

Asteya in Modern Life

In the fast-paced, consumer-driven culture of today, the principles of Asteya are more relevant than ever. Here are ways to integrate non-stealing into everyday life:

  1. Time: Respect the time of others by being punctual and not overcommitting. Honour your own time by prioritising tasks that align with your values.

  2. Energy: Avoid draining others through negativity, gossip, or unnecessary demands. Cultivate self-awareness to manage your own energy effectively.

  3. Resources: Practice sustainable living. Avoid overconsumption and waste, recognising that the Earth’s resources are finite.

The Subtle Forms of Stealing

Asteya also invites us to reflect on less tangible forms of stealing, such as:

  • Stealing attention: Dominating conversations or interrupting others can rob them of their voice.

  • Stealing ideas: Claiming credit for others’ work or failing to acknowledge contributions diminishes collective progress.

  • Stealing from yourself: Neglecting self-care, procrastinating, or doubting your worth deprives you of living fully and authentically.

Practising Asteya in Relationships

Asteya fosters healthier relationships by encouraging:

  • Mutual respect: Avoid taking others for granted. Appreciate and acknowledge their efforts.

  • Healthy boundaries: Recognise when giving too much of yourself may lead to resentment or burnout.

  • Generosity: Sharing knowledge, resources, and time without expecting anything in return embodies the spirit of abundance.

Cultivating a Mindset of Abundance

At the heart of Asteya is the belief that we live in a world of plenty. Practising gratitude and focusing on what you have rather than what you lack shifts your perspective from scarcity to abundance. This mindset reduces the urge to take from others and fosters contentment.

Asteya and Trinbagonian Culture

In Trinidad and Tobago, where the spirit of sharing and community is a hallmark of our culture, Asteya aligns naturally with our values. Embracing non-stealing encourages us to preserve these traditions while also reflecting on areas where modern pressures may challenge them, such as over-consumption or resource waste.

Bringing Asteya into Practice

Here are a few practical steps to embody Asteya:

  1. Mindful consumption: Buy only what you need and seek sustainable alternatives.

  2. Gratitude practice: Regularly reflect on what you’re grateful for to cultivate contentment.

  3. Audit your time: Identify areas where you may be overcommitting or stealing time from yourself or others.

  4. Give back: Volunteer or share your skills and resources to contribute to your community.

Live Without Taking More Than We Need

Asteya teaches us to live with integrity, respect and generosity. It is a reminder that true wealth lies not in accumulating but in sharing, not in taking but in giving. By practising Asteya, we foster harmony within ourselves and our world, creating a life rooted in abundance and gratitude.

Let us commit to exploring the essence of Asteya in our yoga practice and beyond, recognising that when we live without taking more than we need, we honour ourselves, others, and the Earth.
