The First Steps Series: Your Guide to Primary School Transition Success - Day 1

Your child is about to start primary school; a huge step filled with curiosity, excitement and maybe a little nervousness. For a 5-year-old, stepping into a bigger world with new teachers, classmates, routines and expectations can feel overwhelming. Your support, encouragement and thoughtful preparation can make all the difference, helping your child feel confident, secure, and ready to embrace this new adventure.
Here’s how to guide your child through this important transition:
1. Talk About What to Expect
Children feel more confident when they know what’s coming. Explain the school day in simple terms: when lessons begin, when breaks happen, who will be with them and what activities they might enjoy. Use familiar language and share stories from your own school days, fun memories, lessons learned or a favourite playground game.
Knowing what to expect reduces anxiety, helps children prepare mentally and gives them a sense of control over their new environment.
2. Establish a Predictable Routine
Children thrive on predictability. A few days before school starts, adjust bedtime, wake-up times and morning routines. Practice getting dressed, packing their bag and leaving the house on schedule.
Small rehearsals like walking to the bus stop, timing breakfast or packing snacks help children feel ready for the real first day. Consistency builds confidence, reduces stress and creates a smoother start to each day.
3. Visit the School Ahead of Time
If possible, tour the school together before the first day. Walk through the corridors, locate the classroom, playground and bathrooms. Point out areas that will be part of their day.
Familiarity transforms a large, unfamiliar space into a welcoming environment. When children recognise their surroundings, the first day feels less intimidating and their curiosity can shine over fear.
4. Encourage Independence
Primary school is a time for children to practise autonomy. Encourage your child to:
Put on their shoes and zip jackets independently
Pack and carry their school bag
Manage small tasks like opening snack containers
Praise effort rather than perfection. Even small achievements, carrying their bag without help or following instructions, build autonomy, resilience and a sense of pride.
5. Reassure and Normalize Feelings
It’s normal for both children and parents to feel nervous. Words of reassurance help children process their feelings and embrace the day:
“It’s okay to feel nervous; new experiences take courage.”
“You are capable of learning, making friends and having fun.”
“Mommy/Daddy is proud of you, and I know you will do your best.”
Acknowledging emotions validates your child’s feelings, helping them develop emotional literacy and confidence in facing challenges.
6. Keep Connections
Even as your child starts school, small gestures maintain your bond and provide reassurance:
Leave a comforting note in their bag
Create a special wave, handshake or phrase to use at drop-off
These small rituals let your child know you are present in spirit, creating emotional stability that supports learning and exploration.
7. Celebrate the Transition
After the first day, take time to reflect together:
Ask what they enjoyed the most
Discuss moments that were challenging
Celebrate any small achievements, like making a new friend or trying a new activity
Recognising wins, big or small, reinforces confidence, positivity and resilience, and makes them feel proud of stepping into this new chapter.
Stepping Into the Adventure
Starting primary school is more than just a first day; it’s the beginning of a journey that nurtures independence, curiosity and growth. With preparation, patience and encouragement, you help your child enter this period of their lives feeling capable, excited and secure.
Every first step your child takes is a victory. By showing love, guidance and support, you empower them to face this new adventure with courage and joy.
